North Africa

Fatima al-Fihri, born in Fez, Morocco, founded Al-Qarawiyyin in 859 CE — recognised by UNESCO and Guinness World Records as the world's oldest existing university. Using her inheritance for the good of her community, she oversaw its construction herself, fasting throughout the project. Her legacy is the institution of higher learning itself.
