Menelik II

Menelik II crushed the Italian invasion at the Battle of Adwa in 1896, making Ethiopia the only African nation to decisively defeat a European colonial power. He modernised the empire by introducing railways, telephones, and public education. His victory became a beacon of hope for colonised peoples around the world.
