Patrice Lumumba became the first Prime Minister of the Democratic Republic of Congo and a towering symbol of African self-determination. His fiery independence speech on 30 June 1960 electrified the world. Betrayed and assassinated within months of independence, his memory became a rallying cry for pan-African liberation across the continent.
